Use the decision below to clarify a real offer before accepting it. This guide does not provide a valuation, a buyer, or a guaranteed pickup appointment.
Ask Whether Today's Transaction Is Actually Ready
If you want to sell today, start by confirming that the buyer has reviewed the vehicle description and offered terms. Request the expected net amount, quote expiration, documents needed, and any inspection conditions before scheduling collection.
Then establish whether a pickup slot is available at the actual location. A same-day quote does not necessarily mean same-day collection, and a scheduled collection does not explain when payment will be made.
Ask for the pickup window, the collecting company or person, and a verified contact if the appointment changes. Explain access or loading limitations in advance. Keep the arrangement connected to the offer you accepted instead of treating the dispatch message as a separate agreement.
Connect the Three Handover Checkpoints
| Checkpoint | What should be settled |
|---|
| Quote accepted | Vehicle details, net amount, required documents, and permitted adjustments |
| Pickup confirmed | Actual time window, authorized collector, and responsibility for collection costs |
| Payment and transfer | Method, amount, timing, required paperwork, and receipt |
At pickup, review any claimed discrepancy against the condition already disclosed. If the amount changes, ask for the reason and revised net figure before accepting the new terms. A driver arriving does not resolve an unexplained price change.
Do not assume “cash offer” means physical cash will be handed over. Establish the actual payment method in advance. The FTC warns car sellers about checks exceeding the sale price and requests to return the difference. Do not send money back from an alleged overpayment.
If payment is by check, money appearing available in an account does not prove the check is genuine; see the FTC's explanation of fake checks. Resolve payment verification before relying on the funds or releasing the vehicle. If today's arrangements cannot be confirmed, obtain a realistic appointment rather than treating the advertised speed as a guarantee.
Keep the Vehicle, Buyer, and Handover Consistent
Have the written offer identify the vehicle, buyer, pickup location, stated condition, payment method, and conditions that could change the amount. Confirm who is collecting the vehicle and who is responsible for paying you.
Check the transfer and reporting requirements with the motor vehicle agency for your state and situation. Ask the buyer what ownership documentation is required; do not assume that a missing title or outstanding loan can be ignored. Retain the agreed offer and sale records.
Accept a Complete Offer
Resolve the question above before agreeing to the handover. Confirm the amount, permitted deductions, pickup responsibility, and payment arrangement in writing. If a material term changes, review the revised offer before accepting it. An advertised cash offer is useful only when it becomes a transaction you understand.
